Kyle's Actions
Shopping
Support Imperfection
I will intentionally buy ugly produce at the grocery store, farmers market, or sign up for an ugly produce CSA box.
Shopping
Buy From A Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat directly from a local farmers market and make 3 meals.
Shopping
Source Local Foods
I will buy locally grown food from my grocery store and make 3 meal(s).
Shopping
Stick to Your Grocery List
I will bring my grocery list that accounts for what I already have in my fridge and cupboards and only purchase the items on that list.
Planning
Create a Weekly Meal Plan
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu of meals and ingredients for my household of 1.
Planning
Take a Food Inventory
I will take a fridge and pantry inventory to stay up to date with what I have at home before I go grocery shopping.
Community
Collect Organics Recycling at an Event
I will collect organics for composting at a gathering or special occasion for 5 guests.
Cooking
Swap This for That
If I am missing an ingredient for a recipe I will find a substitute I have on hand and use that instead.
Planning
Track My Wasted Food
I will keep notes on all the food that my household of 1 throws out so I can learn how what we're wasting, how much, and why it goes to waste.
Storage
Preserve food
I will try a new method of food preservation, such as canning, pickling, drying or making jam. I will try 3 preservation techniques.

Kyle Samejima 9/28/2020 1:44 PMTracking my wasted food provides that extra visual layer of accountability and has made me much more diligent about getting to things on the edge and moving them to my freezer or mouth quickly! -
Reflection QuestionShopping Buy From A Farmers MarketWhat food items do you prefer buying from a farmers market than a grocery store? Why?
Kyle Samejima 9/28/2020 1:42 PMI get almost all my eggs, meat and cheese from the farmers market, because I know the producer and how they raise their animals and care for the land. I haven't bought conventional supermarket meat, cheese, or eggs for a long time, even though I have a lower income. It is worth the investment. -
Reflection QuestionShopping Stick to Your Grocery ListWhat are some of the things you typically buy that you weren't on your list? How do you think you might limit some of those purchases?
Kyle Samejima 9/28/2020 1:40 PMThe things I buy are usually snacks, so definitely don't shop hungry. -
Reflection QuestionShopping Support ImperfectionWould you be more willing to buy produce with a few imperfections at your grocery store? Why or why not?

Kyle Samejima 9/23/2020 9:40 AMJust being a part of this challenge keeps me focused on what is in my fridge. There are so many things that demand our attention, for better or worse. This challenge keeps me focused on reducing wasted food that aligns with my values to be more present, grounded, and reducing my footprint. -
Kyle Samejima 9/23/2020 9:27 AMI went for the second time to the Kingfield Farmers Market and the Wedge will a grocery list from Mealime and know that I spent less money and time in the store and feel less stress about knowing what I am going to make. Which is good for my ADD brain! -
Kyle Samejima 9/16/2020 11:14 AMJust knowing other people are actively working on reducing wasted food is motivating and inspiring. And I did start calling it "wasted food" and not just "food waste", after hearing Kellie Kish, the City of Minneapolis Recycling Coordinator talk about this. It puts more of the accountability on me to call it waste food and not just food that somehow magically got wasted. -
Kyle Samejima 9/03/2020 3:14 PMI love the community aspect of this challenge and how we can all see how our others are doing and how our collective actions add up! I know the impact that our food systems have on climate, water and air and know our actions add up. I want to dig deeper into the actions that just seem harder to address, like meal planning.
