Start Organics Recycling
My household will sign up for organics recycling service or start using a drop-off site to compost food waste and food-soiled paper.
Community
Recycle More Organics
I will add organics recycling collection bins to all areas of the house where organics are generated, such as the bathroom.
Cooking
Veggie Scrap Stock
I will store vegetable scraps in my freezer and use them to make veggie stock. I will make 3 batches.
Cooking
Save the Peels
When life gives me lemons (or other citrus peels), I will use the rinds to make a nontoxic cleaner.
Shopping
Stick to Your Grocery List
I will bring my grocery list that accounts for what I already have in my fridge and cupboards and only purchase the items on that list.
Planning
Track My Wasted Food
I will keep notes on all the food that my household of 2 throws out so I can learn how what we're wasting, how much, and why it goes to waste.
Planning
Take a Food Inventory
I will take a fridge and pantry inventory to stay up to date with what I have at home before I go grocery shopping.

Reflection QuestionPlanning Take a Food InventoryAre there food items you have been better about using up and not wasting since you started keeping an inventory of what's in your fridge?
Marie Listopad 10/06/2020 9:23 PMYes, I have started to save the cut scraps of vegetables. I freeze them in zip lock bags and will use them the next time I make broth from the carcass of a chicken. -
Reflection QuestionCommunity Start Organics RecyclingWhat kind of organics recycling did you start and how is it going for your household?

Reflection QuestionShopping Stick to Your Grocery ListWhat are some of the things you typically buy that you weren't on your list? How do you think you might limit some of those purchases?
Marie Listopad 9/22/2020 9:16 AMI am pretty disciplined about sticking to my list. I have a set of items I will always buy to keep in stock. My list consists of items that I may not buy every week and I need to remember. I also look at sales. Many items I do not buy unless they are on sale. Sometimes I will buy a gift item that is not on my list and this happens very rarely. -
Reflection QuestionPlanning Track My Wasted FoodWhat did you learn by tracking your wasted food? Was there anything that surprised you?
Marie Listopad 9/22/2020 9:12 AMMy husband is not as enthusiastic as I am about conserving food. I frequently eats broccoli and will recycle the stems. I love to use the stems for soup. I can see that most of out organics recycling consists of tea bags and loose tea. -
Reflection QuestionCooking Veggie Scrap StockHave you ever made soup broth from scratch before? What kinds of vegetables do you have on hand to put in?
Marie Listopad 9/22/2020 9:09 AMI enjoy making broth from scratch. I use whatever is in my refrigerator that is about to go bad - ugly vegetables. I mostly have broccoli, carrot and onion. -
Reflection QuestionCooking Save the PeelsWhich citrus do you have the most of and what kind of cleaning product will you make?
Marie Listopad 9/22/2020 9:06 AMI mostly have lemon and I use it to make an all-purpose cleaner. The recipe is a 50-50 mixture of water and white vinegar, a drop of dishwashing liquid and a piece of citrus rind. Somethings I add a bit of rosemary or lavendar. -
Marie Listopad 9/22/2020 9:04 AMI am committed to using every piece of food I can and responsibly recycling anything I can. -
Reflection QuestionCommunity Recycle More OrganicsWhat types of organic materials were you missing before you added more organics bins around your house?
Marie Listopad 9/22/2020 9:01 AMNothing really. Most of my organics recycling are scraps that cannot or are not used in cooking. I will be looking more closely at making vegetable broth from vegetable trimmings.
