  • Reflection Question
    Cooking Veggie Scrap Stock
Have you ever made soup broth from scratch before? What kinds of vegetables do you have on hand to put in?

Yes! We love making broth from scratch as a base for all types of soups - including ramen. We typically use onion skins, garlic skins, green onions, corn cobs, thyme, carrots & tops, and celery. We've had mixed results with adding in too many kinds of scraps so we generally keep it limited to just those items.

What food items do you prefer buying from a farmers market than a grocery store? Why?

Pretty much everything! Always looking for locally sourced options.

We now store herbs in a jar of water, and have started labeling leftovers with dates so we know how long we have before they're no longer safe to eat.

I had been keeping Milk on the top shelf but moved it to the bottom where it's cooler. :)

All types! Lemongrass is also really nice to add - for whatever reason it makes smoothies taste like Froot Loops :)
  • Reflection Question

Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

Growing and harvesting our own vegetables really makes us appreciate how much time, money and energy goes into growing and producing food. Growing our own veggies also really makes me reluctant to waste anything -- we're more willing to try new recipes with things like green tomatoes, carrot tops, etc.
  • Reflection Question
Shopping Stick to Your Grocery List
What are some of the things you typically buy that you weren't on your list? How do you think you might limit some of those purchases?

We typically impulse-buy snacks, sweets, single-serve drinks, etc. that we don't put on the list -- in the heat of the moment at the store we get excited about something tasty that we don't necessarily need to bring into the house! Eating before we go shopping definitely helps.
