Bonnie's Actions
Storage
Properly Store Berries
To keep berries fresh, place them on top of a paper towel in a sealed container to absorb excess moisture and reduce chances of molding. I will properly store 2 packs of berries.
Planning
Keep a Food Inventory
I will take a fridge and pantry inventory to stay up to date with what I have at home before I go grocery shopping.
Cooking
Cook Just Enough
I will scale down the recipe of a meal to make just the right amount for my household of 3 so we eat everything up.
Shopping
Stick to Your Grocery List
I will only purchase the items on my grocery list and avoid impulse purchases.
Shopping
Buy Loose Produce and Shop the Bulk Bins
I will buy loose produce with a reusable bag or food from the bulk section to get the exact quantity I need.
Planning
Track My Wasted Food
I will track the food that my household of 3 throws out so I can learn what we're wasting and why.
Community
Get Social
I will share a Save The Food social media post or other information about food waste and the actions I am taking.
Storage
Be Smart About Food Labels
I will learn about food labels and not throw food out just based on the date on the package, but instead check the smell and color to see if it has gone bad.
Community
Watch a Documentary About Food
I will watch 3 videos or documentaries to learn about the scope and scale of food waste in this country.
Community
Send it Down the Grape Vine
I will talk to 4 family members or friends about my experience with this challenge, food waste, and what I have learned.

Reflection QuestionCommunity Send it Down the Grape VineDescribe the conversations you had and if you learned anything about what other people think of the topic of food waste.
Bonnie Wefler Hansen 8/17/2022 8:12 AMMost people are supportive of the better ways to dispose of food waste. I plan on ordering a waste can this fall and am hoping my neighbors will follow my lead. I mentioned trying collecting food waste at the school where I work. Got encouragement! -
Bonnie Wefler Hansen 8/09/2022 8:40 PMTalked to my daughter about food waste and this challenge. -
Reflection QuestionStorage Be Smart About Food LabelsDid you know that not all food labeling means the same thing? How have you changed your habits to decide if food is still safe to eat?
Bonnie Wefler Hansen 8/07/2022 5:42 PM“Best by” means it’s probably fine to eat but may have lost a little freshness. I won’t throw out food if it looks ok and smells and tastes fine. -
Reflection QuestionCooking Cook Just EnoughWe often worry about running out of food so we make too much. What thoughts and feelings have come up when you make just the right amount to eat up all the food?
Bonnie Wefler Hansen 8/07/2022 5:37 PMMy family doesn’t like leftovers and the food ends up in the garbage. By making less or using the freezer for smaller portion helps reduce waste a lot. We’ve reduced our meat consumption so I will freeze half of a steak or roast for another day. Or if I make a pot of soup, I’ll freeze half for another day. -
Reflection QuestionShopping Buy Loose Produce and Shop the Bulk BinsHow has buying bulk impacted the amount of food you waste?
Bonnie Wefler Hansen 8/07/2022 5:29 PMI mostly notice the amount of packaging I eliminate by buying in bulk. I like buying popcorn (no more microwave packages), loose leaf tea (no more tea bags) and oatmeal so far. -
Bonnie Wefler Hansen 8/03/2022 6:02 AMAt NNO last night, we had finger foods and chicken wings. I brought out a bag and asked everyone to put their bones in it so I could compost it. I got full participation! (We ate almost everything that was put out!) -
Reflection QuestionPlanning Track My Wasted FoodWhat did you find you are tossing the most? How can you change your habits to avoid wasting this food?
Bonnie Wefler Hansen 8/03/2022 5:58 AMTake out leftovers.
Share an order with someone. Or divide the meal before eating and save it so that it looks more appetizing to eat next day. -
Reflection QuestionPlanning Keep a Food InventoryAre there food items you have been better about using up and not wasting since you started keeping an inventory of what's in your fridge?
